Location removal: photos stored without where they were taken
By default, Hidy imports photos and videos in Optimized quality. That saves space and removes location data from them. If you need files exactly as they were, switch the import setting to Original.
- Optimized (default): saves space and removes location data from photos and videos.
- Original: keeps files exactly as they are, including location.
- Change it in Settings before you import.
Why location data matters
iPhone photos usually record where they were taken, down to a few metres. A photo of your street, your child's school or your flat's view can reveal a home address. If a vault backup or a shared copy ever leaks, location data leaks with it.
How it works
- Optimized is the default import quality. Photos and videos are stored smaller and without location data.
- Original keeps every byte of the file, including its location and other metadata.
Optimized photos are re-encoded as HEIC (or JPEG where HEIC isn't available) at up to 3,024 pixels on the long side. The setting applies to what you import from then on. It doesn't rewrite files already in the vault.
One honest limit: if a file can't be optimized, Hidy stores the original rather than lose your import. That copy keeps its metadata. If location matters for a specific file, check it with the metadata viewer before you import it.
Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.
When to choose Original
- You need the exact file, for example as evidence or for professional editing.
- You rely on the location to remember where a photo was taken.
Removing location before sharing
Hidy's setting protects what's in the vault. For a photo you're about to post or send, use the free photo metadata remover. It runs in your browser and doesn't upload the file. Or follow how to remove location from iPhone photos using iOS's own options.

The setting applies to photos and videos. Documents you import from Files are stored as they are.
How can I remove location from a photo I'm about to share?
Use our free photo metadata remover, which runs in your browser, or turn off location in the iPhone share sheet's Options before sending.
