Hidy Vault vs calculator vault apps
Calculator vault apps look like a working calculator and open a photo vault when you type a code. The disguise can be convincing. What protects your photos, though, is what happens behind it, and that varies from app to app.
- A calculator disguise hides that a vault exists. It doesn't by itself protect the files.
- Check each app's listing for how files are encrypted, where backups go, and whether there are ads or an account.
- Hidy only borrows the look of a calculator icon (Pro). The protection is the pattern-derived encryption.
Disguise and encryption are different jobs
A disguise answers "is there a vault on this phone?". Encryption answers "if someone finds it, can they read it?". A calculator vault is very good at the first question. Whether it answers the second depends entirely on the app.
Side by side
| Typical calculator vault | Hidy Vault | |

| Ads | Common in free versions | None |
| Account | Varies | None |

Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.
Five checks before you trust any vault app
- Encryption on the device. Does the listing say files are encrypted on the phone, not only in the cloud?
- Who holds the key. If the company can reset your code by email, it can also get to the data.
- Backups. Are backups encrypted with something only you know? What happens if you lose the phone?
- Ads and trackers. Check the App Privacy section on the App Store page.
- What it admits. A trustworthy app tells you its limits. Be wary of "100% unhackable".

Where a calculator vault is better
If your main worry is someone noticing that a vault app exists at all, a working fake calculator is a stronger disguise than an icon. Hidy deliberately doesn't pretend to be a calculator. iOS 18 and later can also hide any downloaded app in a locked Hidden folder, which removes it from the Home Screen entirely.
Where Hidy is better
- The pattern is part of the encryption key, not just a gate.
- No ads, no account, no Hidy server.
- A decoy vault for when someone forces you to unlock (Pro).
Frequently asked questions
Are calculator vault apps safe?
Some are and some aren't. The calculator is a disguise; safety depends on whether files are encrypted on the device, whether backups are encrypted with a key only you hold, and how the company handles your data. Read the App Store listing and privacy label.
Can someone tell a calculator vault apart from the real Calculator?
Often, yes. The App Library, Settings, Screen Time and the App Store's purchase history all show the real app name. A disguise works against a glance, not a search.
Does Hidy have a fake calculator?
No. With Pro you can use a Calculator-style icon, but Hidy opens to its pattern grid. Its name under the icon stays Hidy Vault.
