Are photo vault apps safe? 7 checks before you trust one

Updated 31 October 2026 · By Hidy

Some photo vault apps encrypt your files with a key only you hold. Others put a PIN screen in front of readable files, show ads, or keep a way to reset your access. Seven questions, answered from the App Store page and the app's own documentation, tell them apart.

Quick answer
  • Does it say files are encrypted on the device, not only in its cloud?
  • Can the company reset your code? If yes, it can reach your data.
  • Check the App Store's App Privacy section for tracking and data linked to you.

The 7 checks

  1. Encrypted on the device? Look for a clear statement that files are encrypted on the phone. "Password protected" alone often means a lock screen in front of readable files.
  2. Where does the key come from? The best answer: from something only you know, like your code or pattern, combined with a device secret.
  3. Can the company reset your access? An email reset is convenient, and it means someone other than you can get in.
  4. How do backups work? Are they encrypted with a key only you hold? Are they in the free version? What happens if you lose the phone?
  5. Ads and trackers? Read the App Privacy section on the App Store page: "Data Used to Track You" and "Data Linked to You".
  6. Account required? An account isn't bad by itself, but it is one more place your data and identity are linked.
  7. Does it admit limits? Trustworthy apps say what they don't protect. Be wary of "unhackable" and "100% secure".

Common red flags

Compare specific apps: Keepsafe, Private Photo Vault, calculator vaults. Or try Hidy Vault, free for 3 vaults.

Price is one of the checks: a one-time payment photo vault avoids renewals but still needs a clear refund and export policy.

Before you trust any app with your photos, check which apps can see your photos in iOS Settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is "military-grade encryption" a meaningful claim?

It usually means AES, which is good, but says nothing about where the key comes from or who can reset it. Look for those details.

Are free vault apps unsafe?

Not necessarily. Check how the free version is paid for: ads and trackers in a privacy app are a trade-off worth knowing about.

Has Hidy Vault been audited?

Not yet. Hidy has functional regression tests but no independent cryptographic audit. Our security page says so.
