Before you sell or trade in your iPhone

Updated 22 October 2026 · By Hidy

Apple's checklist ends with Erase All Content and Settings, which removes everything on the device. The risk for private photos is the other way round: forgetting to bring your vaults to the new phone before you erase the old one.

Practical answer
  • Move each vault to the new iPhone first: restore from iCloud or a backup file with its recovery phrase.
  • Check every vault opens on the new phone before you erase the old one.
  • Then follow Apple: sign out, and Erase All Content and Settings.

The right order

  1. Back up the old iPhone and each Hidy vault.
  2. Set up the new iPhone, install Hidy Vault, and restore each vault with its recovery phrase. See transfer a vault to a new iPhone.
  3. Open every vault on the new phone and check a few files.
  4. Then erase the old one: sign out of your Apple Account and use Erase All Content and Settings, as Apple describes.

What erasing removes, and what it doesn't

Want photos your iPhone passcode can't open?

Hidy Vault keeps photos, videos and documents in encrypted vaults that open only with a pattern you draw. No account, no Hidy server. Free for 3 vaults.

Frequently asked questions

Does erasing the iPhone delete my iCloud photos?

No. Apple says erasing the device doesn't delete content from iCloud. Delete it there separately if you want it gone.

Does erasing remove Hidy vaults?

Yes, from that device. Encrypted Hidy backups in your iCloud or backup files you saved are separate.

What if I already sold the phone without erasing?

Apple recommends changing your Apple Account password. Hidy vaults stay encrypted behind their patterns.
