Phone searches at the border: protecting private photos

Updated 22 October 2026 · By Hidy

In some countries, border officers can ask to inspect your phone. Rules differ widely, and refusing can have consequences. The calm approach is to travel with less on the phone, and to keep what you must carry encrypted and backed up.

Practical answer
  • Carry less. Remove what you don't need on the trip, after backing it up.
  • Keep what you need in a vault with its own pattern, with an encrypted backup and the recovery phrase at home.
  • Know the rules where you're going. This page is not legal advice.

What an inspection can reach

An unlocked iPhone shows everything its apps show: Photos, Messages, Files, notes, and any vault you open. What's encrypted and closed stays unreadable without its key, but you may be asked for that key too.

Travel with less

  1. Back up first. Make an encrypted Hidy backup of each vault, and keep the recovery phrases at home or with someone you trust.
  2. Remove what you don't need on the trip. A vault you can restore after you arrive doesn't need to cross the border on the phone.
  3. Keep the rest in a vault with a pattern you don't use anywhere else, not in Photos.
  4. Restore after arrival from iCloud or a backup file, using the recovery phrase.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a decoy vault at a border?

Deleting data during an official inspection can be illegal in some places. Check the law for your route before relying on it.

Can I restore my vaults after the trip?

Yes, if you made an encrypted backup before leaving. Restore it with the vault's recovery phrase.

Does encryption stop an inspection?

No. Encryption protects files from being read without the key. It doesn't decide whether you're asked to unlock.
